Portishead in Bloom

BRITAIN IN BLOOM  is the biggest horticultural campaign in Europe. Started in 1963 it has grown to the size it is today due to the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers in local communities across the country. There are hundreds of communities involved in cities, towns and villages. There is one common aim for all:

To regenerate local environments - planting trees, shrubs and flowers  - landscaping

- addressing local environmental issues: litter, graffiti and vandalism

PORTISHEAD has a dedicated group of volunteers, who as the Portishead in Bloom committee are the organisers of many events in the town to support the towns entry into the Britain in Bloom competition.

Anyone who wants to help the town in its Britain in Bloom quest, can get details by calling the chairman Gordon Randall on 01275 848205

Committee members:

Sandy Tebbutt, Johnnie Johnson, Dennis Miers(Secretary), Gordon Randall(Chairman)

2008 Status report from Gordon Randall

Portishead in Bloom is gearing up for a busy summer and hoping that this will be a golden year for the town. The diary kicks off on March 26th when the Spring Garden competition will be judged. This is open to anyone in the town and usually attracts a good entry. Entry forms will be available from the Folk Hall.

The highlight of the year will be the Open Gardens weekend on June 7th & 8th. This is always a great event when something like 15 gardens will be open to the public. Last year people came from as far afield as Wales and the Midlands, such is the reputation for the weekend. More details will be published later but if anyone would like to include their garden please ring 01275 843566.

The judging for this year's South West in Bloom competition will be between July 7th & 18th when hopefully the town will be looking at its best. Last year we won an RHS silver gilt medal. The judges made a couple of recommendations where we can do better and these are being followed up. But however well we do it will be a long wait until September before the results are announced.

No definite date yet but the annual general meeting will be early in October when the John Daws Pegasus cup will be presented. This is given each year to someone or some organisation that has raised the prestige and profile of the town. Last year's worthy winners were the Christmas Lights committee so start thinking of a recommendation you would like to make for this year.

Please give your support to the Portishead in Bloom team who help to make our town a much more pleasant place
