The Portbury Hundred - Traffic

I was pleased to see the be aware of motorbike signs over the past week, hopefully this will help to make people aware and avoid any future tragedy. Whilst this measure will help, I feel that whoever it is that makes the decisions should realise that this road is always going to have accidents because of its length, width and current speed limit. It is a road which gives people the feeling that it is a fast road. The number of accidents that have happened over the years have never made the powers that be change anything. In my estimation a few good changes would make things a lot safer, reduce the speed limit to 40mph, ban overtaking by all vehicles including motorbikes and ban U turns.

Pedestrians crossing at the Cabstand junction

When the experiment to turn off the traffic lights started drivers were giving way to pedestrians who wished to cross the road. Many still do, but today after waiting for at least half a dozen cars to stop, there was only one way to get across and that was to step into the road and stop the cars. How sad that cars again do not see that pedestrians have a right on the road also. Does anybody in authority care what happens at this junction? People get back into their old ways very quickly, it is no good expecting things to control themselves. Would somebody get a grip of the situation, make it clear of the future and make it clear who gives way to who!

Harbour Road - Traffic Ramps

How have the new ramps on Harbour Road been constructed so badly? Is there not a specification to build to, is there not an inspection when these jobs are being constructed or completed, is there nobody controlling the job? I understand that the road at the end of the ramps leaving Portishead is to be raised to compensate. Another set of workmen, more cost to the tax payer. It won't be the last time for this sort of thing, will it?

On behalf of myself and my neighbours, I would just like to thank the driver of the white transit van (P477 XXX) who forced his way at speed up Woodhill Road this morning (saturday), scraping my car and speeding off.

Football in Portishead

There are many clubs and teams in Portishead, Mens, Boys & Girls. Probably hundreds of people play football week in week out with mums, dads and families watching them. Many players would aspire to continue playing football after the under 16's, and the next local step up would be Portishead Town FC. Why then are there so few people encouraging the group of adult teams which again play weekly representing our town. Developing the top teams in Portishead should bring benefits to all groups and indeed see a progression of children from junior teams to adult football. Why not give your local town team some support!

Quays Avenue, speeding traffic

I am concerned about people who drive through Portishead at speed above the limits. Quays Avenue though seems to be a rat run. See how fast you can go between roundabouts. It is a straight road which encourages those people with no concern for residents or road safety to speed. I would take a guess that at least 75% of the people drive down Quays Avenue are speeding. Why! Because their attitude is, I can do just what I like it has got nothing to do with anyone else. The limit is 30mph an easy speed to travel at. We do not want speeding drivers in Portishead. Go live somewhere else with your anti social behaviour.

Cabstand Traffic Lights

With the traffic lights having been in place now for some time, it seems that the irritation of waiting has calmed down. People have got used to it and have accepted it, those who oppose them probably avoid them and so everybody is happy. Why spend further money when the next solution will be opposed by someone. There isn't a solution that will suit everyone and after all the vast majority of local people are not bothered either way. I must say though, an extra filter or two would not go amiss and perhaps more time given to the light letting the High Street clear. If up to 2000 people demonstrated to get the junction changed, then up to 23000 people do not want it changed that's 92% have accepted it. Let's put the matter to bed and get on with something important!!!!

Pride In Portishead

What a wonderful group of people. Each month they spend their Sunday morning picking up litter from areas of our town. If it were not for those people the rubbish thrown down would be blowing around the town. It helps to improve the look of the town for events such as Britain In Bloom, but more importantly it shows how some of us take pride in the town, such a shame that more of us do not get involved once a month. Wouldn't it be good if areas of the town set up their own groups linked to Pride In Portishead and kept their own areas clean. A bit of community spirit.

Portishead Railway

Has anyone carried out a survey , indicating how many people would actually use the railway on a regular basis? It does seem to me that it is something that will never happen. Don't get me wrong I would love to see a railway, probably for more nostalgic reasons than anything else, but the town encourages the type of people who have a car or two and that is their way of life and nothing will change it. It is a much younger town than ever and those people are travelling to many other areas than into Bristol. Probably the majority of people in Portishead who leave the town each day do not go to Bristol. It would probably be a better bet to improve the buses, then at least we could travel in a few different directions. With the train you're off to Bristol okay.

Harbour Road Speed Limit

20mph!! What a waste of time. Change it back to 30. Does anyone know of a single person who travels at 20mph? Just drive down the road at 20 and see every other person behind you get so irritated. Then dare to go along Quays Avenue at 30 and your dead. The car that followed you all down Harbour Road will then scream past you at over 30mph, cursing all the way. This is not an isolated incident. If we have restrictions, which are for a good reason then we must abide by them. But of course the idea is not to fine people for travelling over the speed limit but to make people so irritated that they stop driving, Ah! and use public transport. That is why nobody ever bothers about catching speeders on Harbour Road.

Portishead In Bloom

I have just read the article in the local newspaper about plants being stolen from tubs in the High Street. Who would do such a thing? Portishead In Bloom and the Pride In Portishead groups always work very hard to make our town a much brighter place to live in. Out in all weathers for free, shame a few more people don't get involved! I drove down Harbour Road the other night about 8pm to see a couple of people pulling out weeds from the pavement outside Kestrel Court, Portishead In Bloom people, no dought getting the town ready for the judging for the South West In Bloom competition this month. Wouldn't it be nice if Kestrel Court could spend one hour a week keeping the space tidy and for that matter any other company could do the same outside their place. By the way, I expect the people who took the flowers are the same people who throw the McDonalds wrappers on the roundabout, and leave all their litter at the Lake Grounds. If you care for our town join the volunteers on the first Sunday of each month.

Car Parking on the Marina / Village Quarter

The situation of parking half on and half off the pavement is a necessity. This was always going to be the situation from the planning stage. The streets are constructed too narrow, the houses are too close together and there is not enough parking for cars. Roads are for parking on as well as driving on, so if parking means that other road users cannot get by, somebody got something wrong. Also huge problems are caused for pedestrians. Because cars are on the pavement, then pedestrians have to walk in the road. What a mess but remember, it was planned like that. Just to get a few more houses in. Or is it to encourage people not to drive or have two cars? Well it won't work. Perhaps the people on the Marina could use the bus? not on your life, the bus can't get along the road because of the parked cars. Delivery lorries are another problem, as they cannot get along many narrow roads perhaps there could be a communal pick up point somewhere. So I say park on the pavement, park on the grass but please don't park on the road.
