Oxfam Online Hub Portishead

The Oxfam online hub in Old Mill Road has just celebrated its first anniversary in town, and continues to seek enthusiastic volunteers to help raise funds for Oxfam. It is one of only two national online centres & over the last year raised over £100,000 for Oxfam's projects overseas.

Next year it has a target of £170,000.
The hub has 10,000 items for sale online and aims to double this. Over the coming months, 15,000 secondhand books will be listed on Amazon, keeping them out of landfill. There are more than 60 volunteers of all ages at the hub, ranging from students, those working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award, those in between jobs, mothers, as well as retired people. Young people can gain national volunteer awards. We are seeking volunteers who can help with some of the following: Photographing the clothing and accessories, creating interesting listings of items for sale on
the online shop system, and van drivers. If you are interested in having a look around, please contact Julian or Louisa 01275 397546 or

Portishead Horticultural Society
This is a busy time for the gardener - plans have been made, seeds ordered and delivered, ground prepared, now to put everything into action! If you are a vegetable gardener, now is the time to start potatoes into growth. Set up the tubers on end in shallow boxes and place in a light, frost free place until planting time in March or April. By then the "eyes" will be well formed. If the smallest of these shoots is removed, leaving two or three larger sprouts the crop will contain less small, un-usable potatoes. Sowing small seeds can be difficult - if too thick thinning is a chore! Cutting a small hole in the corner of the packet, allowing only a few seeds to escape at a time helps. The pot should be full of compost, but only a light covering for
the seeds. Good luck and heavy crops!!

Showstoppers
A holiday club with the theme "Showstoppers"
will be held for children

of Primary School age (4-10 years) at

Roath Road Chapel, Portishead
from 6th to 9th April each morning from 10am to 12noon. There is no charge and no prior
registration is required.

 There will be a varied
programme of games, crafts, quizzes and talks each morning. All club leaders are registered
with the CRB. For further information phone Elaine or Malcolm on 01275 848945.

Avoid the rogues. Trading

Standards say don't deal

with doorstep traders.

Ask friends or relatives to

recommend reputable

local traders.

'Scam Wise Southwest' is a campaign by Trading Standards in

South West England to help stop people being conned by rogue traders.

'They're just out to get your money. Don't fall for it!'

Door Step Sales - protect yourself!

- don't open the door to strangers - use a spy-hole or window to check who is calling

- use password schemes offered by utility companies and councils

- if you're expecting a caller by appointment, use your door chain & check their identification

- don't have work done by someone coming uninvited to your door

Telephone Scams - say 'no thank you' and hang up if:

- the company phones you out of the blue

- you're asked to part with money in advance

- they use high pressure sales tactics to confuse you

Postal Scams - tear it up & recycle if the letter contains:

- addresses that are PO Boxes, suite numbers or based abroad

- a request to send money

- a request for your bank account details. Report it to your bank.

- an instruction to call a telephone number beginning 09
